Sole
purpose is to ground the neutral of an otherwise
isolated neutral system.
Provides
a relatively low independence path to ground, thereby
maintaining the system neutral at ground potential.
In
the event of a line to ground fault, the grounding
transformers allow a fault current to flow which
is adequately large enough to cause proper operation
of protective relays.
